As a part of the residency, I work on the thesis.  I also work on the visual projections and took photocopied images from the digital files, printed these versions and pasted them to the wall surface.

This is a continuation with exploring issues around technology and culture, specifically with forms of nature as archived events, buried within the ditigal frame. In my immersive video environments, my work explores archived images and events, phantom representations of fluid forms.  This is evident in works: “Flowers & Leaves #1 & #2- 2001-2007, and video installations.

The imagery in the works appears as a ghostlike apparition of past events and living forms encased within the absolute state of the technological apparatus.  Throughout digital representations are archived images/events and phantom representations of fluid forms encased within the digital frame which vanish at points and spaces reappearing in fragmented and entropied forms.

“Dispense with the notion of time as a linear form in filmic narration, the film plane as a horizontal visual point of action/activity.  Consider the mechanized reproduction of copied imagery, and you will notice vanishing points. “

This is a truly wonderful book.  I had the chance to exhibit and have filmwork recognized in this publication.  This was a truly amazing exhibition of contemporary video /film work done by women of the African Diaspora.

HISTORIC, MONUMENTAL, & FABULOUS, November 25, 2008 By mary ellen pleasant the exhibition–the first ever of its kind—is a great contribution to the canon of art and Cassel-Oliver and Barnwell Brownlee knew what they were doing to produce such a great publication….the historic exhibition will will live on long after it comes off tour……….. a definite resource–textbook quality

I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Paris, France in 2007 and spend time there with my other talented filmmaker and videographer colleagues.  I am always inspired by the incredible creativity in the artistic community there.

Conceptual Photos

The photo pieces and experimental films have me thinking of systems of logic and how forms of logic and systems of thought predispose us to particular forms of perception. It is forms of logic and patterns of thinking within this logical system of thought that create the perception of the film plane as a flat space which runs in linear time as opposed to a space with parallel vision. Also, the creation of montage and timed sequences within the filmic frame.

Since the Spelman show, I’ve thought of this in relation to issues of race and gender as well. In 4 black and white photos, the concept or notion of color only exists in relation to it’s polar opposite. There can be no black unless there is white and so on within the color scale. Each color exists in relation to it’s other. In this symbolic construction of language and perception, each color frame defines the next scale of perception.
